Mike King says if it’s an athlete in any sport who could be great at mixed marital arts, it is a football player. King is scheduled to fight knockout artist Oscar Delgado at CFA 11 May 24 at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fl.

King, a former outside linebacker, said football players pack lots of power.

“NFL players are the most powerful in terms of athletics,” he said. “I think college wrestling is the best background. But if you come from a football background you will be powerful,” he said.

The former football player said the sport is in his past as he focuses only on mma. So much so, he doesn’t even play the sport for fun due to prevention of an injury. But MMA is evident in football. He says football training has moved to mixed martial arts’ type of workouts.

“All training has moved to total body movements,” he said. “You burn more body fat and you become stronger.”

Some NFL players who have converted to mma include Matt Mitrione, Marcus Jones, Bob Sapp, Wes Shivers and Brendan Schaub to name a few.

Catch King in action against Delgado at CFA 11 at May 24.

CFA 11 will also feature the semi-finals of the all women tournament for $20,000 and the 145-pound CFA woman’s title. Ticket information will be released soon.
